A first generation oodle has 2 purebred parents of different breeds (ie a pure poodle with a pure Australian Shepherd). Therefore the puppies produced are 50% poodle and 50% Aussie. By crossing one purebred dog with another, you have the benefit of hybrid vigour. This means the chance of having puppies with the common genetic diseases in their pure breed mix is significantly reduced. First generation oodles are also usually smaller in size than F2 or F3 oodles.
Another factor is the fluffiness. Assuming that the poodle parent has 2 copies of the furnishing gene (the gene that provides a long fluffy, wavy, low shedding coat, especially on the face), first generation oodles will generally have a pretty predictable shaggy coat type. The most popular purebreds that are combined with a poodle to make an oode are golden retriever, cavalier king charles spaniel, labrador and Australian shepherd. None of these breeds posses a copy of the furnishings gene required for fluffiness, and all have short hair on their faces. The first generation cross will always have one copy of the furnishing gene from a poodle that possess 2 of them. Further generations have the ability to obtain 2 copies of the improper coat gene that comes from the non poodle parent, resulting in a dog that sheds hair and has a straight coat and short hair on its face - not the traditional oodle look. Alternatively, F2 and F3 puppies can be almost genetically purebred poodles and lose the qualities that the non poodle parent was introduced for.
There is a lot of contention surrounding mini aussies (aka miniature american shepherds, MAS) in Australia, and that is simply because they are so rare here, and the facts about the breed are not widely known.
Although there have been a small number of breeders with imported minis from the USA in Australia for many years, the Miniature American Shepherd was not recognised as an independent pedigree breed by our Australian national kennel council ANKC until 2022 (very recently!).
The Miniature American Shepherd (at that time still called the Miniature Australian Shepherd) was first developed in the late 1960s by breeding what was thought to be small Australian Shepherds, and by the mid-1970s the breed had reached its current desired size. The Miniature American Shepherd was recognised by the American Kennel Club (AKC) as an independent pedigree breed in 2015.
Physically, the Miniature American Shepherd simply looks like a small Australian Shepherd. They are bright, self-motivated and endearingly loyal and lively companion dogs who have an affinity for horses. Females stand between 13 and 17 inches at the shoulder; males range from 14 to 18 inches. Despite their small compact size, Minis are every inch a true herding dog: energetic, versatile, rugged, and extremely bright. They are loving, great with children, and make excellent family pets.
However, they shed. A lot. This is why the miniature aussiedoodle has become one of the most popular oodle breeds in the USA over the last few years. Families wanting the beauty and intelligence of the miniature american shepherd, but not the extreme shedding, have found their perfect pet in the aussiedoodle.
Full profile DNA testing, hip & elbow scoring where appropriate, comprehensive vet checks regularly.
Aussiedoodles, or any oodles for that matter, can never have pedigree papers.
These are reserved for purebred dogs (ie pure poodle OR pure Australian shepherd), that are generally involved in the dogshow circuit.
No cross breed dog (a dog that has more than one breed in its genetic mix) can ever have a pedigree with Dogs Australia.
What you will get with a mini aussiedoodle from us is a well socialised, healthy and happy puppy from 2 DNA tested parents bred for their exceptional beauty and calm temperaments.

Obviously we are biased, but we think aussiedoodles are the best family pet possible. They are sporty/energetic but can also chill out, they are intelligent but not too intelligent (like the border collie - who is exhausting to keep mentally stimulated), they are loving, loyal and they ridiculously beautiful!
Our aussiedoodles range in size from toy 6-10 kg (small cavoodle size) to mini 10-15kg (cocker spaniel size). Standards are above 15kg.
They are socially-orientated and want lots of attention. Aussiedoodle are no stranger to hugs and cuddles, they will want to be a lap dog no matter how big they get. Thanks to their strong social skills, they have no problems making friends.
Aussiedoodles are known for their friendly, loving, and intelligent temperament. They are good with children and other pets, and they make great family dogs.
Colour descriptions can be confusing, as there are breed specific terms for colours that are different amongst breeds, but are essentially the same. For example a red Australian Shepherd is actually genetically brown, but referred to as red. Bearing that in mind, we have included a couple of colour charts so that you can get an idea of the colours and how they can be labelled. Where it says brown, note that this is also called RED in Australian Shepherds.
Toy/Mini are the combination of a miniature Australian Shepherd and a toy/mini poodle. These puppies are expected to range from 6-10kg and be the approximate size of a small cavoodle/Maltese/Pomeranian.
Mini are the Combination of a Standard Australian Shepherd and a toy/mini poodle. These puppies are expected to range from 10-15kg, and there is generally quite a variation in these litters, with some obviously larger puppies and some clearly small ones, and the ones in between. We try to match the puppy size to the requirements of the families.
Standards are the combination of a standard sized Australian Shepherd and a standard poodle. Theses puppies are 20kg plus. Those wanting a standard size are often well matched to one of the larger puppies in the mini pairing from a Standard Aussie and a mini poodle as well, as there can be puppies in those litters that are large like their mama!
Flying puppies interstate is very easy to organise, here at AussieDoods Australia we use specialised pet transport that we have formed good relationships with over the years.
We can send puppies anywhere in Australia by direct flight for approx $300.
