One of the most important aspects of caring for a dog is ensuring the food you provide is nutritious and delicious.
Choosing the best food for your Aussiedoodle can seem complex. So many types of dog food are available, so how do you know the best diet for health and longevity?
The specific energy, maintenance and health support your puppy needs from their food depends on their breed and size.
X-small and small dogs have weaker jaws and smaller teeth than larger dogs, so the food they need has to be the right size and texture so they’re able to chew it easily. It also needs to be easily rehydrated for when they’re weaning.
Medium dogs tend to spend a lot of time outdoors, so their food needs to give them appropriate levels of energy plus build up their natural defences. This includes their skin and coat, which serve as an important barrier to bugs and disease.
Large and giant dogs grow more slowly than smaller dogs and develop muscle later in the growing phase. They need a food which supports this sustained growth while also having a texture and shape that’s the right size for their mouth to encourage crunching and slow down eating speed.
We feed all of our dogs LYKA DOG FOOD. In an industry built around processed diets, a little fresh feeding goes a long way. Much like us humans, dogs feel better and live better when they eat fresh, wholefood ingredients — and there’s plenty of research to back this up.
At Lyka, they work with world leaders in Veterinary Nutrition, relying on research in nutritional science, as well as the microbiome and metabolomics, to deliver a tailored fresh feeding system that has the potential to see dog’s health soar. While kibble and canned foods are cooked at high temperatures, losing essential vitamins and minerals in the process, their lightly-cooked recipes retain highly digestible, vital nutrients. This is optimal for early development digestibility and boosting the long-term health of your puppy.
All of LYKAS recipes are designed to meet and exceed AAFCO’s nutritional requirements or puppies, as well as the minimum puppy requirements for FEDIAF. This includes a controlled amount of calcium and phosphorus to meet growth requirements. Our focus isn’t just physical health — they carefully combine ingredients that have been handpicked for their potency and benefit for the mind as well as the body. Their recipes are high in human-grade, MSC certified sources of omega-3. Combined with a healthy balance of vitamins, this enhances our holistic approach in supporting neurological health.
The size of your dog has a significant influence on the sort of food they need, and a strong impact on how they eat, digest and respond to different foods. There are five different size categories for dogs:
Our Aussiedoodles range from 4kgs-25kgs
Full-grown Aussiedoodles should be fed two meals a day.
Aussiedoodle puppies need to eat more frequently—between three and four times a day on a consistent schedule.
When you first get your puppy at around eight weeks of age it is recommend to give them three to four scheduled feeds a day.
Once your puppy reaches around six months old, switch to two feedings, and maintain this through to maturity.
The puppy should move to adult food when you see he's finished growing. Usually, that will be around his first birthday, but if you have a larger puppy such as they should be feed a formulation specifically designed for large breeds until they are two years.
The best dog food for your Aussiedoodle is raw food. Not only will a natural, whole food diet help to keep your dog healthy and happy, but it can also prevent a range of common health conditions such as obesity, joint, dental and digestive issues, and common allergy symptoms such as excessive itching and skin complaints.
A dog’s stomach is not anatomically designed to digest and ferment carbohydrates (the main ingredient in kibble). Even grain-free kibble often contains high levels of starchy carbs, including rice, potato, legumes, & lentils. Feeding a dog kibble puts their digestive system under pressure, spikes insulin, glucagon and cortisol throughout the day, which taxes the pancreas.
These inappropriate ingredients, coupled with the intense heat processing used to manufacture kibble, denatures the nutrients leading to something called advanced glycation end-products. AGEs can cause inflammation and put strain on many vital organs, leading, in some cases, to a host of serious health conditions.
Whilst you could create homemade raw food meals for your Aussiedoodle, dog owners new to raw feeding can often find making their own raw dog food meals complicated. Formulating meals with the appropriate ratios of key ingredients is essential to ensure your dog receives optimal nutrients, so going it alone can seem daunting.
The good news is there is a much simpler approach. By choosing a reputable supplier of pre-prepared raw dog food supplier, you can stock your freezer with quality raw food meals at the click of a button.

Our puppies obviously start out on their mother milk. Our gorgeous mamas here at AussieDoods are fed LYKA Dog Food throughout their pregnancy.

Nutrition is the foundation of all aspects of health for puppies as they grow and develop. Acknowledging this, LYKAS recipes are carefully formulated to ensure the correct balance of micro and macronutrients to support ethical breeders through their litter’s development.
On varying days we incorporate different proteins, vegetables, oils, fats as well as LYKA Supplements and treats.
The reason we feed our adult mamas such nutritious food is that it gets transferred through their milk.
So through the transfer process our newborn puppies are essentially eating LYKA.
When our puppies turn 4 weeks old they start to develop teeth. This is when we start introducing more solid foods into their diets. We call this our PUPPY SLOP stage.
Puppies are only just transfering from their mothers milk, so their new diet has to replicate that consistency. To get the right consistency we add water, bone broth and divetelact puppy milk to a Chicken, Beef or Lamb LYKA pouch.
Throughout the next few weeks we slowly build up the thickness of the puppies food until we reach solid form.
Puppies picked up from us here at AussieDoods Australia will also receive either a Chicken, Beef or Lamb LYKA pouch to take home with your new puppy!

If you have concerns about what your puppy is eating, as gross as it may be, checking your puppies stool is a great indicator.

SAFE PROTEINS
Lean meats and fish belong in our pets' diets! Meats are best given plain, unseasoned and free of added oils. You may feed the meat fresh or cooked however, cooking generally removes the risk of bacterial and parasitic contamination. Also never feed your pet cooked bones.
SAFE VEGETABLES
Vegetables can be a great low calorie snack that is full of vitamins, minerals and fibre. Most vegetables are best served plain with no seasonings and cooked (boiled or steamed) for easier digestion.
SAFE FRUITS
Fruits can be another nutritious snack and can be fed raw. However, be careful not to feed too much as they do contain a lot of natural sugar which can potentially cause tummy upsets.
OTHER SAFE FOODS
If you find yourself wondering, "What human food can my dog not eat?" while trying to resist your pet's begging face, be sure to check before giving in. While you can feed your dog some human food, certain things can actually be very dangerous for pets. We've highlighted some of the most common foods that can be dangerous to animals:
If you think your dog may have eaten something toxic, CONSULT A VET immediately for advice.
